It was a real pleasure to stay with a Mongolian family for a few days in between camping. The word ‘Ger’ means home in Mongolian and refers to these yurt like structures. Apparently they can take as little as 25 minutes to take down which is an obvious benefit to a nomadic people. The orientation is symbolically important to Mongolians. It is regarded as the center of the universe, as well as a microcosm within it. The entrance faces south towards the sun, the north is the most special place, for sacred objects and honoured visitors. The west side is the male side, where the men sit and store their tools, saddles, and hunting kit. The east is where the women sit and keep their cooking utensils. We are learning much about Ger etiquette such as walking around it in a clockwise fashion and departing out the door backwards.
