On assignment for a recent @natgeo story, I was in Death Valley National Park. Standing under an ocean of stars at this high altitude, the glow of Las Vegas is still boldly visible, disturbing the natural environment from 90 miles (145 km) away. But more surprising is the fainter glow behind me (swipe). This is Los Angeles, still visible from 170 miles away (275 km). Light pollution is a story that many of us are dealing with, but few are talking about it. It's not just about the vanishing beauty of stars. This is a massive waste of energy, sending undirected and unshielded light to the sky. It's about the environmental impact on birds, insects, and many other species, including us.
