How do glaciers turn lakes turquoise?
As large, active glaciers push through rocky valleys upstream, they "bulldoze" pulverized rock into fine particles that end up absorbing and scattering sunlight in ways that give lakes a striking blue-green color.
Pictured here are lakes from New Zealand’s South Island that stand out for their distinctive turquoise color, as seen in this natural-color satellite image from Landsat 8.
