Tombstones are illuminated by a cloudy sky at Arlington National Cemetery on May 26. Though the connection between the history of #MemorialDay and the cemetery runs deep, the creation of the burial space for the fallen wasn’t carefully planned. Rather, it was an act of desperation as the Civil War death toll mounted. Today, more than 400,000 people are buried there, and the cemetery has grown from 200 acres to 624 acres; additional planned expansions could bring it up to 688 acres.
