I always wake up on Memorial Day thinking about my Uncle Murray who passed away a few years ago at the age of 92. Uncle Murray was a U.S. Army medic during the second World War and earned many medals for his bravery. He barely talked about it. But the rest of the family did and let him know how much we appreciated his service to our country and to our freedom. He was a member of what we call “The Greatest Generation” – you know, the generation who stopped evil Nazis from taking over the planet. In the case of my Uncle, he even helped liberate a concentration camp. Practically all Americans have a relative that fought, died or suffered during that effort. Without their bravery we’d all be speaking German right now and worshipping David Hasselhoff even more than we already do. In honor of my hero Uncle Murray I wanted to have a solid representation of the Greatest Generation on my new Netflix history show in which funny people play historical figures who in turn roast other even more beloved historical figures. Of course the greatest roaster in history is another hero of mine, the great Don Rickles. Long before Don was a stand-up legend, he served in the Pacific during World War Two as a U.S. Naval Seaman. At his memorial, I saw his daughter Mindy give a hilarious eulogy for her dad. So on Historical Roasts, when we decided to do an episode about World War Two it made sense to fatten up Mindy Rickles, shave her head and put her on the dais to portray her dad during his Navy days. Mindy as Don was and Don’s wife Barbara Rickles even sat in the audience laughing and throwing kisses to the stage. It’s a beautiful tribute I know comedy fans will love. So long live Don Rickles. Long live my Uncle Murray. And long live The Greatest Generation. #MemorialDay」5月28日 2時06分 - therealjeffreyross
