A staggering 3.4 million young people in the U.K. live with or care for a parent with a mental illness. This means that in an average classroom, eight children (25%) have a parent with mental health problems. Our Time was formed with the intention of helping children who find themselves in a family where mental illness features. Through ‘KidsTime Workshops’, children receive peer support, education and a space in which to talk about their concerns, have fun and foster positive relationships with their family. I was privileged to attend a session last month and saw first-hand the support the charity delivers to those in its reach. Our Time equally have established an education programme named ‘Who Cares?’ for primary, secondary schools and collages to establish support and training to enable staff to set up systems to help individuals in need under their care. Our Time is compaigning to secure greater recognition, understanding and help for these children and young people by engaging, supporting and championing their needs at local and national levels. It is a real honour to be able to work so intimately with a new charity that has already positively impacted so many individuals and has the potential to help many more. Being able to work in a ‘hands-on’ manner with the work the charity provides is of real importance to me and I feel very privileged that my involvement with this wonderful organisation will allow me to do so.
