Virginia was the first writer I ever knew, and she introduced me to the concept that creativity was free when I was 5 and she was 10. I’d found a composition notebook under my sister’s bed, and inside, I found a drawing of Virginia and her friends surrounding what looked like a dungeon door, under the title “The Secret of the Cellar Door.” When I asked my sister what it was, she said “I’m writing a book about me and my friends.” Instantly, I was indignant. “You can’t just write a book! You gotta ask the government first!” I thought this because my library card had a government seal on it. Then, in an almost Lucy Van Pelt-ish delivery, as if morally outraged by the very thesis her 5 year old brother had presented, my ten year old sister Virginia imparted this crucial piece of information that would rock the foundations of my tiny Jersey world and forever cement my destiny. “This is America! You don’t need permission to write a book,” my Sister said. “You never need permission to be creative.” There it was: Patriotic permission. “You are allowed to dream big because that’s your right as an American.” That was all I ever needed: someone to say “Run, Barry. Run.” I’ve been making up stuff ever since - first because I was given permission, then because it was profitable, but always because it’s still fun. My Sister cracked open my universe nearly 44 years ago with words I still live my life by: “You never need permission to be creative.” Thanks, @va2view!
