I find her takes on love as influenced by patriarchy, gender roles and systems of oppression to be spot on in my experience. Having first read "The Will To Change: Men, Masculinity and Love" and then "All About Love: New Visions," this was a great compliment. It was also important to me to read this to better understand what the women in my life go through when it comes to dating and looking for a partner. Too many books about love and dating leave out the impacts of the way that we are socialized, instead teaching people how to adapt to these oppressive systems. But the truth is, we must liberate ourselves from them if we are ever to explore the full range of our humanity (and love) that we are possible of, no matter what gender we identify as. # "Often, especially for adult women, the choice to be self-loving requires tremendous sacrifice. This is especially true if prior to doing the work of self-love everyone in their lives were accustomed to devaluing and/or subordinating them. Acknowledging this helps us understand why masses of women who may intuitively know they need to do the work of self-love are trapped by fear. Significant changes means we have to confront loss.
