In celebration of #PrideMonth, we’re exploring LGBTQ+ artists and themes currently on view at the Museum. American artist #MarsdenHartley painted Handsome Drinks shortly after returning from Germany to the United States after the outbreak of World War I. This still-life composition shows the influence of Hartley's exposure to the European avant-garde and his nostalgia for the bohemian camaraderie he experienced abroad, including Berlin’s active gay subculture. This painting’s exact meaning still hasn't been decoded, although it features a glass of green absinthe, a potent (and possibly hallucinogenic) drink associated with European café life. To learn and see more, be sure to check out our ASK Pride Tour, available at the Museum through the #AskBKM app.⠀⠀
