If we want know where to start, what this is all about, what people of color face in America at the hands of whiteness as an ideology, or how to help, we must stop asking those affected to do the emotional labor. This is a good place to start learning, and unlearning too. • I got to sit at the feet of two of my greatest teachers, @oprah and @cherylstrayed, and listen to them converse on life and purpose. Oprah said, “You are damaged in direct proportion to how you were loved or not. You real job is to figure out ‘what is it that I really need?’” It’s an inside job. We have to do the work. We have to own our pain and pursue our joy. We have to lift each other up. The music offers a window to unity, and these men are hugged tightly by folks who have previously spoken ill of their existence. one of my best friends said of witnessing the kindness on screen, and not having had it in his own Southern church as a young man, “Something wounded in me behind my consciousness that begged for those hugs.” - @sweetheartdancers2019 is the story of a gay, Indigenous couple who compete as traditional dancers, honoring both their heritage and their individual identity.
