I am very excited to have just signed my very first ever book deal!! I am honoured to join the incredible stable of authors in the @AllenAndUnwin publishing family. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

“Samantha has a very creative mind but she is really letting herself down. The consistent mistakes she makes with her grammar and punctuation demonstrate a laziness in her application to projects. English is not just about creative writing. I would suggest that she move that creative energy to focus on the technical elements of writing, specifically essay structure. She is well behind where she needs to be.” – My grade 10 English teacher.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

Words are powerful; both written and spoken. They cannot be unsaid or unread, always existing, often circulating in our personal echo chambers. ⠀⠀

For so long I held onto the above note on my grade ten half-yearly report card. While my teacher was probably just trying to get more out of me technically, it was not how my mind was wired. The above words glommed onto me for years - and still do some days. Other English teachers saw my creative application and helped me find ways to improve on the technical side of it, but this teacher and I could not find ANY common ground…at all. I hated going to her classes, and I have no doubt she hated having me as a student in them!⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

I still don’t know how to properly structure an essay, but I do know the importance of vulnerable storytelling.⠀⠀ ⠀⠀
I have a burning curiosity with all things creative; creative entrepreneurialism, creative design and environment, and creative writing - just to name a few. ⠀⠀

If you’re hearing echos, know that in this world it takes all kinds of kinds. Follow your curiosity – whatever it may be - and surround yourself with people who are good at the things you are not. ⠀⠀

threadsthataregolden Congratulations, I'm so excited to read this!!! I can also totally relate to that year 10 report card(although I didn't even finish year 10)... there were terms I won creative writing awards and teachers who loved me... others not so much, and this I didn't care and received report cards like that one. And I convinced myself for years and years writing wasn't my thing... I wasn't that great at it and even if I was, didn't really enjoy it. Eventually I found both to be incorrect. ☺️ Can't wait to read! X
