Formerly the imperial palace of the Ming dynasty, the Forbidden City is now a famous tourist spot and no longer forbids commoners nor foreigners to indulge in its historical grandeur. UNESCO made the place a World Heritage Site in 1987, and also listed it as the world's the largest collection of preserved ancient wooden structures.
