To minimize my impact on nesting leatherback sea turtles I spent my nights on Trinidad’s Grande Rivière beach using Infrared lights (IR) - which the turtles, and unfortunately myself, are unable to see. The only way to figure out what was going on in front of me in pitch darkness was to look at the small screen on the back of my camera, modified to only record IR light. So while this might look like a simple black and white image, it is actually created in total darkness using two IR flashes to “illuminate” the turtle and IR torches to paint invisible light (to me and the turtle anyway) onto the headland in the background.
