I was fortunate to be part of the cast, but even more fortunate to have been afforded a better life because of the movement towards equality set into motion with the opening of this play fifty years ago. Detractors to this play label its characters “self-loathing.” They’re not wrong, but we ought to consider the world they lived in. And learn from it. I agree with our producer @mrrpmurphy that “...the world needs more LGBTQ history. It just does.” Laurence Luckinbill who originated the role of “Hank” remarked to playwright Mart Crowley after last night’s win, “the one thing these new young men could not have was the knowledge of the closet you and all of the men were locked in in 1967—and how it twisted and tore lives and shaped personalities—and killed in so many ways so many people.” As a gay man it feels ironic, to say the least, that my life is better personally and professionally having played a gay man whose life was more difficult because he was gay. “Hank” left his wife and children because, though he loved them, resolved to live authentically. That could have been me. If not for the courageous gay men and women who came before me and stood up to be counted, I may have followed a similar path, unintentionally harming people I loved until I finally became desperate enough to tell the truth. I owe the freedom and comfort to live openly and honestly to the people who paved the path before me.
