The British supermarket Waitrose is starting to trial package-free products, with shoppers able to fill their own reusable containers with a range of products from dispensers. Customers at its Oxford branch now have the option to buy products like pasta and rice from dispensers and wine and beer on tap, with prices typically 15% cheaper than the packaged alternatives. This is the first trial of its kind in Britain, despite the top 10 UK supermarkets producing 810,000 tonnes of throwaway packaging each year. @greenpeaceuk campaigner Ariana Densham called the decision "a bold step that could spark a refill culture desperately needed to cut plastics in mainstream shops." katrinat10 I LOVE this idea. I thought about this 20 years ago. I thought how incredible would it be to have the opportunity to refill items, rather than get new packages each time, even soap and laundry detergent and the likes.

pippy_soo @kasiagajos maybe do but one of the implications of it being an expensive store is that they don’t have stores in poorer areas which would mean, I for one, would have to drive for 90 minutes just to find one

valeboss_1 @giacomo_gianniotti yes, it is but in other Countries this is practiced since long time so far. The real challenge is to make this kind of system regular, ordinary and accessible by the most people

aoife_cunn @83vicdoc Ya I saw Oxford but hopefully other places too. Few shops in C Palace and Priory Farm too. Wish some were closer as with missy in tow harder when doing weekly shop 😆 x
