In response to this shitty fatphobic article from @telegraph . Repost from @shishi.rose : “I work out at home because for years I’ve been too scared to go to the gym and thought things like ‘what will people think or say about me being at the gym in this body?”
Or
‘What if I can’t do what everyone else can do there and I look pathetic?’ I have an auto immune disorder and hip issues that means I can’t always keep up with everyone else no matter how fit I am.
I also didn’t want to go to the gym and look frumpy or have on too many clothes and overheat.

Its wild to me how much people hate fat bodies.
That people tell us to work out constantly and yet when there’s work out gear designed for us to do just that we are still shamed and vilified.
•
You don’t make comments about peoples bodies because you are genuinely worried about their health.
You do it because we are walking embodiments of everything you hate about yourselves and try not to be so you attack it.
You hate to see someone existing in a body with joy that you deem disgusting, so you put it down.
And even when you think you dont you still do it in tiny ways whether you realize it or not.
We all do.

Some of the women in my family used to have this game that they played when we were out and about. They would see someone and ask “I dont look as bad as that person do I?” The person would usually be in shorts or something tight that clung to their bodies. I feel like they choose those ones because they wanted to find the ones that looked the most carefree and cut that down. One of us kids would say “no you don’t” and somehow that would reaffirm that their lives weren’t total fuck ups.
I learned a long time ago to hate fat people, unpacking that and changing that has been one of my hardest struggles especially as a fat person. Because giving that up means I’d have to stop self hating.

Im wondering - have you examined your own fatphobia? Have you unpacked your relationship to it and food? How do you talk to yourself? How do you talk to others, including children?
Is your biggest fear still having visible belly print in a dress?”

I have a 9 year old daughter who’s always been heavier than average. At age 7 her pediatrician comment led about it at her checkup and my kid asked me after if she was fat. It broke my heart. She’s an amazing swimmer and gymnast and soccer player and on the local teams for both. We don’t give our kids juice or over indulge in junk food. People’s bodies are what they are and I want her to feel empowered. We are in Hawaii for 2 weeks and she only wants to wear a bikini. I’m super proud that she feels comfortable. Some kids are still mean on school but I always remind her that she’s athletic and can probably kick a soccer ball farther than most boys her age and do a back handspring. I just finished the first season of “Shrill” on Hulu with @aidybryant and I wish my 9 year old could see it - there’s a great episode where she goes to a “fat girl pool party” (their words) and every woman who hates their body should see it. I’m 6’1”, 185# and considered fat for a gay man. I’ve never had the perfect body the gay community pushes and I never will. I don’t need that to be happy. If you see a stick figure in workout gear how would you ever feel comfortable going to the gym?? These mannequins show women of all sizes are welcome and I ???? it.

As someone who is obese i feel rather offended that someone who works so hard and is so fit comes to the rescue like a perverbal white night. Being obese has serious ramifcations to health and body its not just about being a social justice lighting rod for you and others to gleam on to when looking for a cause to be "woke". I have worked very hard for 4 years to loose over 100 lbs and i do plan on loosing more. I am proud of my weight loss accomplishments. And someone who so hypacritical to have a great body and know the benefits of being healthy and turn around and say being obese is okay. I will not stop posting before and after pictures as ibam proud of it as you are proud of your woke book collection. But i am saying is unhealthyness and obesety is not something you know or understand so stop being the benevilent fit man feeling bad for fat women. If you want a good read i suggest the book The War Against Boys by Christina Hoff Summers. Clearly you need it.

I can relate to what you are saying. I don’t think obesity is a good thing but being happy with your own body is a very good thing. There are a lot of shows on tv and adverticements online that suggest being skinny with almost no fat is the ideal and is seen as ‘perfect and beautiful’. This has made it very hard for a lot of people to love themselves for how they are and how they look like with me included. I’ve had and still have a very hard time to like how I look like and it feels like people stare at me which makes me very insecure. So seeing a mannnequin that doesnt look like it has been starved to look like the ideal person is something I don’t think is necesarily a bad thing ?

@sheriff_sunshine if you want to cut down those obesity rates, you need to support those who are trying to lose weight and be healthier. Besides, what about those people with auto immune disorders and metabolism disorders? Don’t all people deserve clothing that is comfortable to work out in? I’m a varsity runner, and there are obese people on teams I’ve been part of trying to run and be healthy. I’ve seen them struggle to find supportive sports bras so they can run without pain. We need clothing to help them be healthier. And you can be overweight and still have a healthy diet, just like you can be thin and have a horrible diet

@mattmcgorry.. People sometimes just choose to be ignorant about certain things. They don’t want to learn because criticizing makes people feel superior to others. they are shallow.. period. They don’t like positivity or to see anyone working to make change for the better. I love how you dig deeper help people really accept and respect themselves, and others. I wouldn’t want you to give up on us. So many have been enlightened and a lot more will be, because you’re an educator of things that really matter. You’re making a difference and I for once admire you. Don’t let ignorant, superficial, know it alls, wear you down... ✊

@sheriff_sunshine registered dietitians would literally NEVER agree with your stand point. Yes, obesity is bad, but your approach is abrasive and hurts people more than it helps them. This Mannequin is about inclusivity, meaning - including all. Maybe that overweight girl will go running in Nike gear because she feels motivated & accepted because of this campaign.
Also, check your facts, heart disease and stroke are the top 2 killers world wide... Anorexia doesn’t make that list, darling. In fact, dying from selfie related incidents is more likely than anorexia at this point in time....
