Aside the many allied soldiers who died, 6000 young German Soldiers also lost their lives. A Maori Battalion soldier spoke about the horrors of the battle, when in the fierce conflict he bayonetted a terrified young blonde haired German boy, who looked likely younger than 18, many conscripted at even age 15. Having been on the ground of that battlefield to honor the Allied fallen soldiers, I felt compelled to also offer compassion for the families of these young Germans who died. I made a pledge that I hoped our young men, Maori & German, would never face eachother again over a battlefield & felt hugely encouraged to have received a huge ovation from the audience.
