Peonies grow across much of China, and were often depicted on wonderfully decorated blue-and-white porcelain like this wine jar.

The plants were often used for medicinal purposes, and peony wine was also brewed. This 14th-century object also features mythical animals including a phoenix and a qilin with a dragon’s head and a scaly, horse-like body.

geekinajeep Just a reminder to everyone that the reason that many treasures still exist is because they did NOT remain in the country of origin. I am not saying that countries should not have right to request reclamation of certain artifacts but such repatriation needs to be carefully evaluated. Why send something back to a country where it is likely to become part of the international art crimes trade, appropriated by a corrupt government official for personal gain or outright destroyed by religious fanatics. Please be aware I am not saying China is such a place but in truth I do not know. Just consider that preservation and public education may be better served if an item remains where it is. What a wonderful way for people outside of China to learn of the richness and beauty of the Chinese cultures. Can such an item not be used bring us together in appreciation, understanding and shared learning? One can endlessly claim everything including the land we walk on the further back in time we go. Where do we draw the line?

ogorman.r Beautiful, happy it's in the British museum, otherwise it could well have been smashed to bits during the Cultural Revolution or some other period of social madness in China!! Pity we didn't take artifacts from Syria and Afghanistan too, perhaps they would still exist!!!
