The World War II Battle of Saipan led to a large loss of life on both sides. The campaign claimed more than 13,000 US casualties, while thousands of Japanese civilians and soldiers lost their lives. A large number of those who died committed suicide by jumping from the island’s cliffs into the sea, rather than surrendering to the American invaders.

While on Saipan for an assignment for LIFE, W. Eugene Smith documented much of this campaign. Today on Magnum we take a look at his photographs, which capture moments of compassion as well as horror. Link in bio.
