Emotional reasoning! Climbing has taught me so much about emotional
reasoning. At a young age I realised that feeling scared didn’t always (or often) correlate with how much danger I was in. It took me another 10 years to start weeding out these distortions in the rest of my psychology and I’m still learning/practicing. -
-
Examples: Feeling scared doesn’t always mean you’re in danger. Feeling guilty doesn’t always mean you’ve done something wrong. Feeling offended doesn’t always mean someone has harmed you. Feeling like an incompetent idiot doesn’t mean you are one. -

It takes a lot of practice to start noticing how the mind jumps from emotion to logic but given the current political climate and toxicity of social media I don’t know whether there has been a more important time for us to get to know ourselves better. And we’re lucky because climbing can help us. For extra help: meditation is a great tool for noticing thoughts. I personally like the @wakingupcourse Also an instagram follower recently pointed me in the direction of this app called Quirk. It’s a free and simple aid for weeding out different distortions in our thinking including emotional reasoning. -

Great advice Hazel! The modern world is manic & mad daily, clutters our minds with useless, contradictory, concerns, stresses, worries. I find on my motorcycle my mind is completely cleared of all the above work related stuff. As with your climbing there is little room for error, concentration and focus is key.

This is the very purpose of the intellect and the higher brain, to discern reality from emotion and whim. Sadly modern education and discourse does little to train this faculty - in the absence of a spiritual life may be people should climb more 😊

@farmers_tan_ the happiness trap is quite good one on thoughts and ACT, Dan millman stuff, waking up (his book), teach us to sit still, the places that scare you (chodron) and lots of stuff on Buddhism

@hazel_findlay I second this message. Yours is the climbing account I follow most closely and value most, and that's exactly because of its interior side, if I can call it that way :)

I love this kind of posts. Would you advice that wakingupcourse for an adult who'd like to take the first steps in meditation? It looks like it's mostly tailored for children...
