Public Enemy started using this boombox in 1987, the year they released their debut album "Yo! Bum Rush the Show." One of the most influential, pioneering and controversial rap groups in the history of hip-hop, Public Enemy voiced statements of protest, activism and social revolution to their audience.
The boombox came on tour in the 1980s and again in the 2000s, providing music for their travels and acting as a stage prop during their shows. Now it's on view in our @nmaahc's "Musical Crossroads" exhibition. #SmithsonianMusic #BlackMusicMonth 📻: Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, Gift of Public Enemy

It's interesting how we are conserving and exhibiting late 20th century objects - things I remember from my teens and 20s. I tend to forget there is a subsequent generation that wasn't there at the time! The historic value of emerging technology, cultural items, plastics - just a few of the future conservator's challenges!

My kids went dumpster diving and scored themselves Walkmans and some cassette tapes a while back, they were completely operational and the next thing I know I was hitting yard sales and thrift stores to find the perfect boom box and more cassettes. They were kind of surprised to see their trash treasures in the Smithsonian.

Can I donate my original cassette tapes for PE’s Yo! Bum Rush the Show and It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back? The cassettes will work on that boom box.

Are there videos of the box in action, on the bus, on stage, etc.? Could be a nice addition to the display, especially if they can be made interactive.
