Today we celebrate #Juneteenth Day, which has particular resonance this year, exactly 400 years since the first enslaved peoples were brought to this land from Africa in 1619. Please swipe for @mrdavidjohns excellent explainer on the significance of this day. Go to my stories for a link to the full IGTV video. (And thank you @imstallings for the meme.) #repost @mrdavidjohns

Can you list three facts about #JuneTeenth? No, no worries. .

Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19,1865 the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that the Civil War had ended and that the enslaved were now free.
This was two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation - which had become official January 1, 1863. .

💞 I don't know any Historical Facts about Juneteenth. Thank you for sharing because this reminds me why we still need to keep pushing forward. I am tired of having to bring myself in order to be " Safe" in my own community. My Nerd-cation in England this past had me feeling more like an " American Refugee " than a tourist. So many people suggested I move to England! But I am not a person who leaves people behind. So I am here to help the younger generation learn how to fight in a way that is both SMART & SAFE. If I can SURVIVE some of the worst of our country & successfully turn my life around... You can too as long as you can keep that 🔥 in your belly burning hotter than the Sun. This Nerdy Girl who was bullied out of high school & through out life has conversations with some very brilliant people now & days. Even over a pint in a pub @ Cambridge University 💞 Believe in Yourself

Not being an over poster.... Listening to @mrdavidjohns speak reminded me about a HUGE DISCOVERY a few weeks back that VALIDATED AN AWFUL TRUTH in the US that occurred AFTER slavery was abolished. If you're interested in learning how a $1,000 bet in the mid 1800's led to African family's being kidnapped & smuggled into the US input "Clotilda + Slave Ship + Mobile+ Alabama". Thank goodness for National Geographic for not giving up on finding the truth. 💞🙏
