Besides the name refugee, we are all just human beings,” said Peace Izabayo, Rwandan-American social worker and former refugee.  Peace fled home for the first time when she was in 2nd grade. From Rwanda to Uganda to Kenya, Peace and her family struggled with the uncertainty of what the next days would bring—or not bring. Fighting off hunger, running from danger, and living in fear, the threat of attack or discrimination permeated every aspect of her young life.  When she finally came to the United States, Peace built a new life. She is now a social worker and has dedicated her life to giving back to people like her.  Currently, more than 70 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Yet, it’s easy to forget that statistics are made up of stories.
