MULTIPLE TONERS!!!! When I discovered this trick, I was blown away (and kicking myself for not figuring it out sooner). The first thing I do is lift to a level 10, which is actually very easy on this girl because she’s a natural level 7! At a level 10, there is still some remaining yellow, so to start out our toning trilogy, I neutralize the yellow with a 9n toner. The 9n helps create the perfect canvas to start depositing the silver tone. This is where 9v gets involved. 9v deposits violet, which is typically used to cancel. In this case, the yellow is already gone so it starts to turn a beautiful silvery hue. If we ended here, her hair would look great but would lack shine. So this is where our final toner comes in, which is 9g! Now you may be saying “Olivia, you just cancelled out all that yellow, now you are adding gold back in?!?” But think about the difference between ash blonde and gold; gold reflects light, while ash deflects light. So by adding gold over top the ash, you create a silver tone that light bounces off of. I know this sounds super involved, and that’s because it is! But that’s what makes the difference in your quality of work!
