Whole Lada Vintage Cars
Sorry, but how often do you see this many old Soviet-made Ladas in one place besides some, idk, Lada show?
Hubs and I rode in these non-shock-absorber-having old bangers to get to the mud volcanoes of Gobustan in Azerbaijan (and maybe took the wheel - check my IG stories).
Like staying on a bucking bronco, our trip was noisy, jarring, unpredictable and wild.
There are a cadre of older Azeri men that run visitors along an unrelenting stretch of road to from the good roads to the mud volcanoes.
As the country of Azerbaijan looks to increase tourism, there is talk of paving these ten miles so coaches can reach the site and guests can ride in comfort. While chiropractors might prefer this, it erases the charm and authentic landscape of getting to such a location. It also puts these Lada drivers out of a job.
Is this progress really progress? What do you think?

@cleverdeverwherever It's a big dilemma for sure. Tourists ruining the natural beauty for being bored after a couple of minutes is truly tragic. I just feel for the people never being able to experience something becuase their own body/physic stops them from getting there. I truly hope they find a solution which saves both aspects, even though that's wishful thinking on my part ?

@jormlinus thank you so much! Yes, I do believe in accessibility for sure. But I’ve also seen pristine and remote beauty be trampled or trashed by too many tourists. Maybe making it more of a challenge to get there creates the sense of deeper appreciation for the spot so it is treated with care and respect?

@margarida6029 it’s tough. Because overall, tourism dollars can improve the lives of locals if it is set up to positively impact the community. But often they don’t see that money and their home and livelihood is turned upside down by too many people who don’t appreciate it.
