Alllllllright, judging by the reaction to the last one of these, you guys want more. So this breakdown is pretty much all about past the knees to the catch.

The first video (and the second in real time) is from University Worlds. 132kg/290lbs, 3rd attempt and I believe my best at the time(?). The biggest thing I want to point out with this one is that the bar barely comes back towards the body. There is no “sweep” or “scoop”. Past the knees, instead of coming back towards the hips & keeping the hips relatively stationary, the bar travels up and the hips come forward to meet the bar. Causing the bar to be pushed away at contact & let’s be real... you’re not redirecting the bar straight up with your arms at 132kg with that kind of motion, it’s just not happening. So that leads to me having to chase the bar & the hop forward, neither of which are ideal.

One way I think about it is trying to keep as little space as possible between my legs and the bar. Almost trace my legs up with the bar. Then I can focus on keeping my body positions in the correct place & following them with the bar. I can stay patient with my hips and my feet & get as much leg drive behind the bar as possible by making contact as close to the “power position” as I can. (in regards to shoulders over hips over feet rather than a reach with the hips). -

The 3rd video is the best example I could find from current times at near maximal weight (135kg/297lbs).(Comparing a 70% lift to a 99% lift would not be effective at showing this for me). Notice NO hop forward. The bar does a much better job of staying close to my body & there isn’t much of a chase and “loop” away. It is more of a JUMP rather than a “smack” at the hips. While not perfect, it is MUCH better than the previous video. This is something I still struggle with at heavier percentages or when I am unusually tired. Cues that help me remember: scoop, push down through legs, JUMP, patient, sweep, trace legs, “legs are ski slopes” (lol), keep hips in place, wait wait wait GO, aim UP (not back) with shoulders.

Also we’re just gonna ignore the atrocity that is the first jerk for now, okay? Okay. GOOD LUCK!
