However, it was important a very long time ago, because it was a sign that someone was a good partner to reproduce with. Now, looks don't matter much for how your children will do in life - now it's self esteem and a good education. With those, we no longer need symmetry. Again, surgeons would be out of if business if they didn't tell people that they need to look 'perfect'.
