dennismathis396 Guy has gotten 100 lifetimes of praise. What’s left to say? I watched him one day in Anglet around 1988(he’ll correct me on the date/sorry bad memory) and couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I fancied myself as better than competent but walked away forever humbled- best thing for me at that time. I was never going pro. BUT- Kelly going against giant pressure to party like the rest of the boys was what stayed with me. He did it without all the carnage that comes along with playing rock star. He ushered in the surfer athlete status so needed to grow the sport. Got shit for it too- heavy pressures. Never changed him. That showed the next generation how it might be done. Sad to say not until recently has professional surfing/surfers stepped firmly into that mold.There is always going to be the bad boy counter culture roots but it’s nice to see surfers not destroying themselves for a change as well. Kelly proved life without chemicals can be un- fucking real.
