The cub and its mother Moonlight appear to be doing well, and @smithsonianzoo keepers are monitoring them closely during these first critical weeks. They were able to weigh the cub June 19 and it was about 6 ounces, which is normal for a newborn red panda cub. The cub's fur will get thicker over the next months and turn the rusty color that gives red pandas their name. Red pandas are endangered primarily due to habitat loss related to human activities.
