I was a proper Igbo boy and I hadn’t been to the Northern part of Nigeria but because my dad wanted me to experience my service year fully,he provided me with a car.
The agreement was that I wasn’t going to go to camp with the car, I was to complete the three weeks in camp and then return to pick up the car.
The trip to the camp was a funny one as our bus broke down on the way and we had to complete the trip on a truck conveying vows to the market in Gombe.
Chai, onwero uzo esi ga Umuahia di nso.
I made a lot of friends during camp including the late MC Loph and I was lucky to have been selected to work in the OBS.
Working in OBS saved me from a lot of camp activities and provided me with more opportunities to part of the team that handled burn fire nights and things relating to entertainment on camp ground.
As a Corp member, working in OBS ( Orientation Broadcasting Service ) guarantees you a posting to the capital of the state for primary assignment and I was posted to teach at Gombe High school,Gombe.
I went back to Aba, picked up my car, went back to Gombe and started work as the Fine Arts Teacher In Gombe High School.
Life was good.I had a car, lived in a private residence, had a show on NTA Gombe and I was a known face around Gombe. *Just imagine an Igbo with a black Mercedes 190*
Things were going just fine, until the Batch B members of Corp members were
sent to camp and I was chosen as a batch A to handle OBS and train new Batch B members.
I took my car to camp, wore timberland boots everyday until that faithful day.
It started off like every other day but Lawunmi insisted that she needed to have a word with me in private.
