Teachers have one of the most important jobs in our society and none should be struggling just to get by. That is why my Thurgood Marshall Plan for Public Education includes paying all teachers at least $60,000 a year.

No one seems to understand the fact that he is not saying everyone else is not important. He is only talking about TEACHERS at this moment. There are many teachers that do year round schooling and still can not afford the basic needs. The teachers that do not do year round schooling are still just as important and should be able to pay for their basic needs, wants and take a vacation. Nevertheless, EVERYONE sends their kids to school because education is important for every job you will ever have. TEACHERS also spend their hard earned money to buy things for your children that you do not even take the time to know that they need. One needs to be able to read, count, explore, learn critical thinking, be loved, taught manners, etc.... at SCHOOL. Many people don't seem to understand that these things are not happening at home. You need people to TEACH the social workers, scientists, doctors and nurses that are in this post raving about how teachers get what they should get. You should all be ashamed of yourselves. No one in this post would be where they are without their EDUCATION and the people who get paid very little to TEACH it to them and struggle. I pray your ignorant personality and nonchalant attitude about the betterment of society don't rub off on your children... because their TEACHERS will be the ones to try and fix it. IJS

To everyone saying “what about...” - OK. You may also be underpaid in your job. However, I don’t see how you can be a Bernie supporter already and not understand that helping one underserved group HELPS ALL GROUPS. Let’s start with teachers. Nurses - do you think you’re underpaid? Let’s work on that, too. But infighting distracts us from the point, which is that there are highly qualified people working very hard without equity. If you’re in a job where you feel extremely undervalued, where there is a shortage of GOOD candidates, etc because of the pay, put your support behind teachers and watch the movement spread.

It’s not just 60k when we’ve been working 20 years we should be at or over 100k. Also state governments should not be able to attack our health benefits. The NJ teachers’ pension lent money to state and still hasn’t paid it back. Chris Christie changed the law so teachers with more years get a pay raise but pay a higher percentage of health insurance so our raises are attacked every year. Some years when you go up you actually pay less. You need to protect all the teachers, especially those with experience and who know what they are doing.

I agree with this completely. But, what about other skilled professions who make a wage that’s barely above the minimum wage? All these fast food workers want more and more money, but I am a senior content writer, which requires excelled writing skills, a knowledge of dozens of standards, great organization, & acute attention to detail. I make less than $18 an hour. Does someone who scoops fries really deserve as much money as me?

60,000 what ! That’s should be there intro and a raise after year end reviews bc I had teachers that I owe a huge thank you to for my development at a adolescences and a teen stage . They have left foot prints in that’s carried with me to adult hood . Certain teachers need raises ! But starting 60,000 yes!
