I’ll go into more details in my Stories, but quickly: Manzanar is an American concentration camp in California (near Mammoth) that held Japanese Americans from 1942 to 1945. At its peak it housed 11k people - it’s one of many US camps that held over 120,000 Japanese Americans during World War II. When Pearl Harbor was attacked, the general American public became extremely suspicious of their Japanese neighbors, and the government ultimately arrested them. Families lost their homes, businesses, family heirlooms, and dignity. This was happening in places like Sawtelle (a street in our neighborhood that was settled by Japanese immigrants) and to kids who attended the very same public school in our neighborhood. One day those kids were in class, and the next they were prisoners here. It’s coincidental that we are visiting a dark moment in our country’s history so close to July 4th. Interestingly, I don’t feel less patriotic having seen Manzanar - maybe even a bit proud that this monument is here as a reminder of what we do not want to become. I’d like to celebrate Independence Day in an honest way; knowing what we can be at our best, and what we’re in danger of becoming at our worst. We are a glorious melting pot. If we “deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law” then we have not upheld our own Constitution. And if we become suspicious of our neighbor because of the color of their skin or their nationality then we fail to be truly American.」7月1日 15時14分 - ryanddobson
