“The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry” (Robert Burns). Nothing truer could be said of the end of my 2018-2019 season. Instead of ending my season as I had trained, prepared and hoped for at Worlds, my season ended on a practice session at Four Continents with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Although I have been working very hard to return to the ice, after much deliberation I have decided to retire from competition. There were many factors that went into the making of this decision, with my injury being only a very small part of it.

I have been incredibly blessed to have spent the past nine years traveling the world doing something I truly love, and to have realized my childhood dream of becoming an Olympian. That being said, I did not achieve all of these things by myself. For nearly two decades now the majority of my incredible support system has remained unseen, so if you’ll bear with me a minute, I’d like to thank a few (dozen) people who helped and supported me throughout this incredible journey.

First, I would like to thank my orthopedic surgeon, Dr. John Crates, for the incredible job he did repairing my Achilles and for all of his support throughout this challenging time. Also making my return to the ice possible was everyone at TMI Sports Medicine, especially Jack, Amanda and my amazing Physio Tom Kirsch. I would additionally like to thank Dr. Bin Zhang, Dr. Lawrence Weis, Dr. Paul Betschart, my Physios, Carley Pearce, Nicholas Allen and Michael Johnson, and my incredible sport psychologists, Tiffany Wilding-White and Gayle Davis for helping repair and keep “Humpty-Dumpty” together mentally and physically all these years.

I would like to thank John Wilson Blades, whose Pattern 99 and Gold Seal Blades I have skated on for over fifteen years, Riedell Skates and Dan Riegelman, whose boots I wore from when I first stepped on the ice in 1999 up until 2017 and Jackson Ultima, Mark Ladwig, Raj Misir, and Kevin Wu, for supporting me and keeping my feet happy these past two seasons. Also, a big thank you to Mark Magliola of Skaters Landing Greenwich, for always taking great care of my fussy feet.
