Photos by Kirsten Luce @kirstenluce | Tourists watch as green sea turtles bask in the sun at Turtle Beach, a nickname for Laniakea Beach, on the north shore of Oahu, Hawaii. When the turtles come on shore to lie on the sand for a few hours, volunteers from @malamanahonu (Protect the Turtles) create a symbolic barrier with a red rope to give tourists the opportunity to watch without getting too close or impeding the turtle’s movement. It is illegal to touch sea turtles in Hawaii.
This is an example of wildlife tourism done right, though it would not be possible without constant supervision from many dedicated volunteers.

eliasandalice We arr travelling now and love animals. And we just don't get why people need to touch or shout all the time. When you see a wild creature - you stand still, do not move and try not to breathe so the animal won't get scared. But every time there is someone passing by and acting like OMG MONKEY/LIZARD/ANYTHING ELSE, EVERYONE, HEY, HEY, COME HERE, COME AND SEE, OH NO, ITS GONE ?

__aloha_nui_loa__ Now make a documentary about the traffic on the North Shore of Oahu because of the “Turtle Beach”. Please @natgeo don’t spread this type of misleading information. Tourists are crowding the beach and the turtles need space (in and out of the water)!!!!

dianenovick We were there the end of May this year. Amazing place! We went a couple of times since it was close to where we were staying. The volunteer was very informative- I really enjoyed talking with her! ?Planning on going back soon! ?

malama808state natgeo you just pissed off all of oahu in your post. we are tired of everyone sending the whole world to 1 little beach to see turtles causing a nightmare for locals. they are at every beach on every island.

whiteswandeb We need to live different. So we do not lose sea turtles. And one million other species. That will be gone. Up our to fix Each and Everyone of us.
