@manic_cat Tyra is a model who broke barriers for people of color in the industry. She used her modeling to create an empire and backed it with a business degree from an Ivy League school. She reposted a young model of color with a lot of potential in the industry and gave her a platform. You’re the one reducing her to just her looks and tearing her down for her choices before even stepping back and letting this girl grow and make a path for her own. We don’t know who she is and what great things she will or won’t do.
Modeling is a profession and a choice anyone is free to pursue. Men, women, non binary, etc. it doesn’t define anyone’s intelligence, who they are as a human being, or any accomplishments outside of their work. You’re making general statements about a 14 year old girl based on her choice of a career and nothing else. A career she may or may not even stick with as she ages but it doesn’t matter what she does in her life. It’s her choice and not yours to tear down and judge. Like I said before, feminism is about respecting people’s personal choices and wanting equality for everyone. You should respect this young girls choice to model, to be a scientist, a housewife, an artist, or anything else she wants. It’s her life and she’s allowed to figure it out on her own terms without an old woman breathing down her neck and attacking her. It’s not your life and you’re embodying the opposite of feminism with these posts.
Also that is what the industry is working towards and what has been happening. You don’t know what’s happening, it isn’t something you’re knowledgeable about and you are making snap judgments about a 14 year old girl because of it. Please examine your choices and stop yourself from spreading hate and ignorance in the future.

@manic_cat why not do your own research. Look up models who have full education and college degrees. Look at the new labor laws passed in Los Angeles for minors. Look at runways in nyc and Europe putting bans on younger models. Look at models who have used their platform for social justice. Karlie kloss’s coding schools and scholarships for girls, Liya kebede’s programs to get healthcare for mothers in third world counties, Dilone who uses her platform to spread awareness of non binary and lgbtq issues. There are so many more models out there making real efforts and trying to change things for the better instead of attacking children on the internet and saying it’s in the name of feminism.
I work in the industry and these things have applied to me and the girls who are underage and have been scouted.
Instead of doing the mature and reasonable thing and taking down your comments and posts harassing these girls you’re going to continue on until you’ve educated yourself in the thing you’ve been lecturing and attacking people on? ? next time don’t open your mouth about something you know nothing about. The internet is a public space and when someone is picking on others and spreading misconceptions people will speak out.

@manic_cat you obviously don’t know a lot about the fashion industry and you aren’t in it at all. There are laws in place now and restrictions being put on underage models. Girls are encouraged to get their education and then if they wish to model at 18 they can get into the industry. Models have also been using their platforms to speak about human rights issues, social issues, and start companies getting girls into stem fields and coding. Models aren’t just silent beautiful faces anymore. If you were educated in what you’re speaking about and judging you’d know some of the top runway models are college graduates in fields various fields from accounting to medical degrees. You’re the one reducing this girl to her face and not her accomplishments. She could have straight A’s and plans for college and beyond or she could not have her future decided yet. She’s 14. Let her experience life and make her own decisions and become her own person. That’s what’s feminism is about. Equality and support for your life choices.

@par.quette @manic_cat I said for the minor to leave modeling + to focus on education. Why do I need to delete this? For you that’s hate, for me that’s public advice. NO WAY I will censor — my comment stands as is. I agree — people will call each other out on social media. I feel that this post is IGNORANT. You feel that my comments are. So how about you understand that we BOTH have the right to speak up + out.

@par.quette this post by @tyrabanks reduces a minor to a modeling pose. I’d love the modeling industry to care about all the points you made — developing the person over an appearance. Well written response, thank you!
