If you need us, we’ll be roller skating to our sweet jams. 🎶 Today in 1979, the Sony Walkman TPS-L2—the world’s first portable music player—went on sale. The design changed music listening habits forever. Its lightweight body and battery life increased music’s mobility.
This early model in our @cooperhewitt has a second earphone jack so two people could listen at once. #SmithsonianMusic

I loved mine. I also loved the “stereo” feature when you could just listen to real life through the headphones in stereo. What a fun gadget to have. All of those features it had (maybe 5) but it wasn’t your dad’s transistor or his hifi.

I had one and a grown up called it “a rude machine”. Now we all have rude machines to ignore each other. Mine was stolen when I fell asleep in the Detroit Airport. And I roller skated with mine plenty:) Mix Tapes? Sony TDX

Remember the moment I first saw one. My friend Jim Goldsmith walked up just as I was getting ready to leave the lake and said something like "You'd like this." I think you all know the rest.

@jadetalks I remember it being around $90, which was a big chunk of change for me back then. They were the iTunes/Bluetooth/Beats of the day. Everyone I knew had one.

@deville199 i looked it up. Today is the 40th anniversary. It was released in 1979. Perhaps you had something similar? ?
