I never used to be very great at pull-ups...I remember when I was about 15 at my ski academy we had a pull-up test as part of physical testing and I could only do 1 and that was with a MASSIVE KICK. Luckily, pull-ups are really not a necessity for ski racing but I remember this one girl who was a few years younger than I was and she busted out 12 or 15 or something, and from that moment I made it a personal goal to be able to do pull-ups. 😂 Now, as you can see, I can do them- but normally I have a little hitch and a kick at the beginning of each rep so this summer I decided I want to work on better control in the full range and I’m kinda excited cause I actually did a bunch of reps today with SUCH BETTER control than I’ve ever done sooo yay for that and I don’t know why I’m saying all of this... maybe someone thinks it’s interesting IDK...if you got through that whole mess of words, congratulations. 😂

About 8 years ago I joined this fun little group at the local gym called BootCamp. The weather broke so the trainer took it to the park, near the end of the session it was announced it was time for our favorites BURPEES, multiple groans were heard, she also made us a deal! If anyone could do 3 pull-ups on the horizontal fence support to the tennis courts, you could skip The Burps. It was a class of about 10 ladies & me, ranging college to retired, so of course me not being afraid of failure, and being years since my last, I accepted. Think I did 5 clean, and 2 not so clean?♂️but I was king of the pegboards 35+ years ago in jr high & high school, can I even do 1 now? ?not sure. Our instructor Aimee competed in beauty body building and kicked butt, I took some personal training till an injury occurred, gave my sessions to my daughter on summer break (now has a fitness training bizz), then her sister 1200 miles away wished she could train too, signed her up, kicked butt in Nat’l CrossFit comps, received her training certain also? btw after the pull-ups I did the burpees too! ?Geez I miss Aimee & getting my butt kicked into shape!!???

So like I was a gymnast and on swimming and diving teams at the Y. When I got to 5' 7" they kicked me out of gymnastics. I did great on some equipment and competed on the traveling squad in Western Mass, but couldn't climb s rope or do rings.

I failed my pull up test by one at Burke year which put me on PTA. At set up, work on engaging your core ( in a hollow hold position) and engage your shoulders. It is hard to do but it will drastically improve your strict pull up.

Appreciate it because they are a STRUGGLE for me...but I believe so good for upper body and overall body composition. Hearing that you badasses struggled with them is comforting and makes them seem attainable???

Not necessary for ski racing. But any other sort of alpine or rock sport it is invaluable, even when you decide to start touring when you retire.
