On July 2, a total solar eclipse passes over parts of Argentina and Chile! ☀️🌗🌎 Total solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth, casting its shadow onto Earth's surface. People in the inner part of the Moon's shadow experience a total solar eclipse, while those in the outer part of the shadow have the chance to witness a partial solar eclipse.

During a total solar eclipse, the Moon blocks out the Sun's bright face, revealing the comparatively faint outer atmosphere, the corona, seen in the second image. The corona is a dynamic region that is thought to hold the answers to questions about the fundamental physics of the Sun.

It’s never safe to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed Sun – so you’ll need special solar viewing glasses or an indirect viewing method, like pinhole projection, to watch at the eclipse.

Watch real-time views on nasa.gov/live starting at 3pm ET / 12pm PT on July 2.
