Like a lot of Germans, I grew up with ( to put it mildly) very conflicted feelings towards the country I was born in. Frau Merkels compassion and courage in dealing with a humanitarian crisis of unprecedented extent, and the worldwide outpour of sympathy that followed changed not only how I felt but also how the rest of the world saw us.
When I told her this this time last year she looked at me with an enigmatic smile and said .. “Ach wirklich? Danke”. She seemed pleased, and it remains one of my happiest moments.
