🌈🏳️🌈 A Roman drinking cup depicting two sexual scenes between male lovers has been reimagined in rainbow colours to coincide with #Pride2019
The Warren Cup was made in the 1st century AD and found in the early 20th century. However, as homosexuality was illegal in England and Wales until 1967, it couldn’t be displayed publicly.
In collaboration with the Museum and @stonewalluk Hal Messel has recast the cup to create eight new dazzling objects, each representing a colour of the rainbow flag.
Donations from the sale of the cups will go to Stonewall and to the British Museum’s continued work with the LGBTQ community.

@gunwalls_the_mighty You know that history is complex and unknowable in a short post...so are people. You do not know my story in its entirety. If you did, you would realize that your accusation is terribly wrong. I am free to like or dislike the fundraising practices of this museum, and to state my reasons without resorting to name calling or hastily made, baseless accusations. My students would agree...even those with whom I have a different view. They were taught to be critical thinkers and how to have civil and kind discussions without name calling.

@uberwagner I’m not on the left or on the right, nice try though. I do my damnedest to avoid anything political but absolutely love bashing on homophobes. I have a degree in Anthropology (I study human cultural) with a concentration in Archaeology (I dig up and study old civilizations). To describe every little intricate detail@that lead to the downfall of the Roman Empire would take days. And to automatically assume I’m on or even participate in anything to the left or right is a farcical joke. Again nice try.

@gunwalls_the_mighty I said nothing about the reasons for the fall of Rome and I am not a bigot. I stood in front of a classroom for 30 years...and am well aware of the complexity of the fall. However, in addition to knowing that Rome’s moral decline contributed to her fall, a casual walk through Pompey would more than reinforce that idea. Old news, common knowledge.

@mischa_smit_kleine I flunked German and French in high school, Latin and Greek in college. I thought you were a native English speaker, just sloppy. I used to be a proofreader and sloppiness annoys me. BTW I once sent a letter to Science News chastising Stephen Jay Gould for using "millenniums" instead of "millennia" so you are in good company.

@sunwynravenwood. Sorry, enlish is my fourth language - out of five. And this art is so poor and it makes me so angey that yes i get stuck in uncoherence out of frustration... Bur do feel free to continue this conversation in french or german. Dutch might be too much of a challenge for you, and my spanish is just a vit worse than english... ?

@arthistoricalish Also, if this did indeed show pedophelia then they wouldn’t be allowed to display the cup. Think about it before you dumbshits jump to conclusions and make assumptions. Way smarter people than you made the decision to display this cup because it’s not what you have already assumed it was. Piss off.
