melaniefootedavis There was a time when I thought I enjoyed having others lean on me. I thoroughly enjoyed giving. I enjoyed pouring what I thought was love into their cups. I felt necessary and useful. I felt like it gave me purpose. After all, they were worth it right? I failed to realize that I too had value. I failed to acknowledge that my own life was worth pouring into. I ultimately exhausted my personal resources. Self-Care is essential to our overall heath. It is important to fill my cup first and pour from my overflow. It was imperative for me to nurture my physical, spiritual, emotional and financial needs. But the only thing I had left were vapors….fumes. Now I am more intentional and deliberate with my choices. I don’t always do it well, but it is a practice that I am committed to continuing. I disconnect from external factors to connect with my creator. I began walking again. I pause, exhale and center myself before agreeing to other people’s demands. I make a conscious choice to say yes to me in some of the simplest ways on a daily basis. I practice releasing the role of a “fixer” I released the weight of carrying other people’s circumstances #RadicalLove?✨

I hope you have heard about Iranian women’s civil disobedience against the Iran‘s mandatory hijab law. Morality police arrests women and forces into a security van to be taken into detention because of their veil. They even seizure cars and fine drivers because of improper hijab. Women in Iran need international help to be heard. We’re not asking feminists or foreign governments to come and save us. We wanted Leaders, especially women, to see that Iranian women simply want the choice. As to your question, I too find it quite difficult to make self care a priority. Times I am successful are when I think about how little time it actually takes to do a few things during the day that are for myself and make a huge difference like: putting on my makeup, filling up a water bottle for work, taking a 10 minute nap between assignments. These things take such little time but remind myself that I count, or as my Mom has advised, remembering to ‘put myself on the list’ of people/priorities to take care of. I also try to remember, that my children learn from watching. If they watch me take care of my own needs, I believe this will help them do the same for themselves in adulthood. ??
