For almost seven years, the @NASA Curiosity rover has been exploring the terrain of Mars. Two weeks ago, it made a stunning discovery: relatively large concentrations of methane gas—a possible sign of life. Are we on the verge of discovering life on Mars, and, if so, what kind of life is it likely to be? Tap the link in our bio to read a Q. & A. with the molecular biologist Gary Ruvkun, who believes that life as we know it may not have originated on Earth.

@bluejeansdiva you see, when you are presented with new information, the larger picture of reality can come into a clearer focus and new conclusions can be drawn from which better courses of action might be taken, removing just a bit more of the blanket of ignorance that impedes human advancement and of which we are largely unaware until we start to tear it away- through science!

Doesn’t take a rocket scientist (or a molecular biologist) to know that there is without a doubt life on every single planet in the Universe. The only REAL question is why do humans think we are the only version of “intelligent” life that exists, and that we are able to make stunning “discoveries” that will come as any real surprise... (hmm?)

@yeahiwish I appreciate your view point, but I keep thinking of what some people used to say about flying. “If humans were meant to fly, God would have given us wings.” Well, we made our own wings, and migration is in our DNA, so we will reach the stars, or we will die off on this planet.

@tfranklinsmith Well that’s why I said foreseeable. I’ve been waiting my whole life for nuclear fusion power plants and fission engines in space. It’s taking way longer than we thought. But if we survive long enough here it is more probable we will do it.

I was reading about the event that formed the Moon - when a primordial Earth collided with a minor planet named Theia. The authors pointed out that life could have begun on Theia, and a few endolithic bacteria could have survived the impact.

But the film is a saddening bore,
For she’s lived it ten times or more.
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dancehall,
Oh man, look at those cavemen go...
