PHOTO: Although Abkhazia is isolated, half-abandoned and still suffering war wounds due to its unrecognized status, both locals and Russian tourists are drawn to the warm waters of the Black Sea. This unrecognized country, on a lush stretch of Black Sea coast, won its independence from the former Soviet republic of Georgia after a fierce war in 1993. Sukhum, Abkhazia. Georgia. 2005.

tiko333 @magnumphotos your information is innacurate. Abkhazia is ancient Georgian land and it's now occupied by Russia. In 1993 nearly 200 000 Georgians were displaced from Abkazia and 15 000 were killed. Russia has supported Abkhazians with military and weapon. Occupant also gave Russian passports to Abkhazian people. Your status is disrespectful to all the people who fought and died for the integrity of their homeland.

142_others abkhazia is region of georgia as any other. it was taken from us by russian government. no matter what these propagandists write here, abkhazia has been part of georgia for thousand year and more. its been only 25 year its part of russia. read the books people. educate yourself

petremaghradze The proper name of the city is Sokhumi! Not Sukhumi and definitely not Sukhum! And "independence" was decleared later, after collapse of USSR. @magnumphotos you are too respected institution to make so obviouse mistakes.
