To mark National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week, we look at the life and work of Richard Bell as he discusses his career as an artist and activist. Bell is a member of the Kamilaroi, Kooma, Jiman and Gurang Gurang communities and makes art that addresses contemporary issues around identity, place and politics. @heshowzoff
NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Festivities are held in the first full week of July, not only in Indigenous communities, but across Australia. #NAIDOC2019

Let us continue to look to the east to the rising sun as we welcome each day.
Full of promise towards the uniting of our nation and its many people. Let us acknowledge with genuineness all the events and actions that are our history and heritage. We do that by looking to the West and the home of the setting Sun. We are moving in a new era a new epoch of language to forge a new inclusive social and cultural compact. Let our words, the instruments of communication be attuned to implement this new era.

So insightful. I see that we live in a world where the scars of colonialism are still felt and only time can tell when we will move on and accept that whatever happened in the last hundred years could be justified by the future. But this far in my life, I have only seen true peace in a group of people who do not call themselves by their nationality. They do exist. I open my doors to them when they knock.

@heshowzoff really good statement art. As colonized people's we should never be afraid to speak up. I love that you do. The struggle never ends for us. I have seen so many positive comments on this thread. I wish the same positive comments for all political, anti oppressive and empowerment art. This is one for the decolonisation movement. Found a new art hero. Tate... Keep this up.

So incredibly inspiring. The lesson here is to FIND YOUR VOICE in Art and speak up dammit! We can't hear you if you're hiding away in the garage with your big ideas, your life experiences, your story. We can't see you or hear the message through your art until you speak up. Richard Bell is fearless. And gifted. ❤️

Throughout the video he talks about the importance of land/home to the Aborigines. With this in mind, it really hit hard seeing him revisit his old home, which was desolate and empty, and at the same time, so full of history, memory and soul.
