George Romney was the most fashionable artist of the 18th century, painting portraits of hundreds of high-society English patrons. Dating from his second trip around northwest England in 1767-68, the artist’s portrait of Mary Wilson, as shown here, is a particularly fine and elegant example of his ability to capture a sitter’s beauty as well as the textures of their costume. See this powerful work and many other treasures in our Inspired by Chatsworth selling exhibition, which is free and open to the public in our #NYC galleries through 13 September. #SothebysMasters #Chatsworth #GeorgeRomney

George Romney actually came from the NW..he was born near Dalton in Furness then in Lancashire now Cumbria and returned at the end of his life and suffering from increasing senility to the handsome house he had built in Kendal and the wife he had deserted 40 years before...he died there in 1802
