MW: The hand written letter Bowie sent me from Berlin in June 1979 (See montage) ...I couldn't believe my eyes when I unexpectedly received it at the Soho advertising agency where I had recently got my first job in London as a junior illustrator. I had taken one of the Bowie artworks I had made at art school to Capital Radio where Bowie was doing an interview in the hope of meeting him and giving him my painting and was hanging out with the hundreds of fans milling about outside the building. One of the fans introduced me to Bowie's lovely American PR lady, Barbara DeWitt, who told me that she thought the picture was great but that Bowie would not be coming out as they were frightened there would be a riot if he did and that she would put the picture in the boot of his car and make sure he got it. This was thrilling enough for me and I soon forgot about it until a few months later when this mysterious air mail letter arrived at my work address. I'm still incredibly touched that David Bowie at the height of his fame, in Berlin, took the time to write me a thank you letter...even writing the envelope himself and presumably also licking the stamp!
