As always, everything comes down to money, or greed, or the bottom line. I am inspired by bands like Radiohead who have always wanted to be part of a solution, to not only create a dialogue but also do something about it. It's not about preaching at the end of the day, it's about doing something about your own effect on our planet - and hopefully others will be empowered by the awareness created but also the solutions some of us are trying to create. Fink has always manufactured our merch as ethically as possible - we make 90% less profit than if we simply ordered it from China and flogged it on tour... we are working on making our touring plastic free, from the AAA passes to the bottled water onstage. NO solution is affordable - but then - I think "affordability", "profit margin" and "convenience" have filled our Oceans with plastic in the first place... it's not about buying yourself out of your carbon footprint, or just shipping the footprint to somewhere far away. It's about not creating it in the first place... I know it sounds preposterous for someone who practically lives in airport lounges and travels around in a 37 tonne nightliner... we can't tour on foot, or by sail... but what we can do, we are doing, from erasing plastic packaging on our tour riders to finding an alternative to shrink wrapping our product - and we will continue to find ways to do it better... it all starts with awareness - and this is what #MusicDeclaresEmergency is all about.
