#Regram #RG @cnnclimate: Environmentalists have removed more than 40 tons of plastic from the Pacific Ocean. And while that might seem like a lot — equivalent in weight to about 24 cars — it barely made a dent. Members of the Ocean Voyages Institute said the cleanup mission was the "largest and most successful ocean cleanup to date" in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Located between California and Hawaii, it is the biggest concentration of floating debris in the world. The crew removed trash including detergent bottles, plastic furniture and children's toys, and also collected fishing gear called "ghost nets" — massive nets of nylon or polypropylene that drift and accumulate plastic debris. “What we’ve done out there is small compared to the magnitude of the problem, but it’s scalable and can be spread,” said the founder of the group. It's estimated that 1.15 to 2.41 million tons of plastic enter the ocean each year. (📸: Ocean Voyages Institute)

When I worked at sea as a marine biologist I’d see this all the time. Especially in the Gulf of Mexico. It’s more than just plastic, it’s also the chemicals and carbon dioxide levels. Fun fact, there were two main carbon dioxide pumps before deforestation. Now that humanity has cut down many of the Earth’s trees, carbon dioxide sequestration relies mostly on the ocean. The over abundance of CO2 has caused many calcium based organisms to suffer because of the chemical reaction that takes place. This include deformed shells and dying corals. Chemicals and Nutrient runoff are monsters too. Many areas of the ocean are anoxic or Atleast very hypoxic because of this runoff (from farms, sewage plants, boats.) what people don’t realize is these chemicals can get into our oceans via groundwater and rivers. The rest is history.
Although no longer a marine biologist I am an ocean advocate. I have my own ideas about America’s fisheries and think we should adopt something closer to Norway’s practices. The amount of dead bycatch we throw away is honestly absurd. But it’s easier to make fishermen throw away all bycatch then to make them sift through what’s dead and alive, or questionable. America could do a better job in investing in our environmental health needless to say.
To end this tangent - there are very limited research positions currently in the environmental sciences. Most of these jobs pay very little of anything at all. We really ought to start normalizing environmental work and make a bigger deal about it. Maybe people like me would still be in the field. I was a Fishery observer and then a marine mammal observer for three years and have a BS in Marine Science from Stony Brook University. Many of my old coworkers and classmates are out of the field.

Now, after seeing this, don’t discard the feeling of sadness you gained with it. Do something about it. Stop buying useless stuff, stop using plastic, stop buying from those giant capitalist industries, stop producing trash, do something, even if it’s small. And encourage people around you to do the same. Thinking that “my change won’t make a difference “ won’t take us anywhere. If everyone thought their change would make a huge difference thousands of people would have started acting to change the world. So change it. You make a difference. Do something
