This was the beginning of one of the biggest challenges I've faced. It's called The Stairway To Heaven. A hundred metre ascent up a cliff on the side of an island in Vestmannyjaer. You must climb using rusted iron rungs hammered into the cliff face not knowing if they might break & a long chain ladder that doesn't allow you space for your hands or feet as it hangs loose against the cliff wall. Then if these Holy Mary grips & the height doesn't freak you out the local large seabirds have a self defense mechanism of projectile vomiting on you as you pass their many nesting spots. This came as a compete surprise to me and it wasnt until about the third bird puked on me that I realized it was an act of aggression. The worst moment in terms of danger was when I reached almost the top & there was a very awkward transition which meant letting go in order to throw an arm out to grab a protruding metal post. It was seriously a do or die situation I really didn't want to be in & as I took a deep breath to launch "PEEEEWK" I got splattered side-on in the face with giant seabird vomit. The scare alone could have made me let go & fall to my death but at that point in the game your breathing & calculations are so wired in that even being surprise-puked-on doesn't break through the concentration mode. Finally when I reached the summit I did a naked haka & one more in my undies when I reached the bottom. I had heard about this place 4 years beforehand when the local Mayor challenged me (for my Icelandic woollen sweater in exchange for his) to see who could stay the longest in 6 degree ocean water. He got out at 24 minute, I lasted 27. I managed by continually doing the haka to hear my core temperature. If you ever get stuck in freezing water, make big noise & explosive actions & it will help protect your core from freezing. Also the biggest reason for climbing The Stairway To Heaven is because it was my brothers favourite song, he played it on guitar. Having lost my brother to a car accident when he was only 21, I made this climb to honor Stephen Wiremu Bennett, my big brother.
