Repost : @karmagawa • In case you thought recycling was the ultimate answer to our environmental issues, think again as the situation is even worse than you imagined. Plastic recyclables from the US and other wealthy countries are overwhelming facilities in Malaysia and other countries in Southeast Asia that now process them ever since China banned the import of plastic waste in 2018. China had been the country that handled nearly half of the world’s recyclable waste for the past three decades, but they wanted to protect their local environment and air quality. So, now those plastics are ending up in landfills in developing countries like Malaysia, where CNN recently visited and here unlicensed plastic recycling factories often improperly dispose of the waste by burning it or dumping it in nearby rivers which has led to contaminated air and water, leaving locals to complain about health issues galore. And now after enough complaints, Malaysia’s government has begun imposing bans on the import of plastic scrap, along with other nearby countries like Thailand, Vietnam and India, leaving containers of plastic sitting in US ports, and also the ports other wealthy countries, waiting for a destination. Pretty crazy, right? Welcome to the global recycling industry mess and why it’s more important than ever for each one of us to curb, and eventually end, our use of single-use plastic to try to help this truly scary crisis. _abbieharkness_ I’m trying plastic free life, and so far doing great! Im going to Bali at the end of the year and I remembered that I use a lot of plastic bottles, as the tap water isn’t safe. Apparently there are stations around Bali that u can fill ur bottle up and the water is safe. Just wondering have you tried these and how do you live plastic free avoiding Bali belly xx thankyou for raising the huge problem of plastic and our reefs, you have really inspired me xx

lifestyle87766 seriously this new e-cigarette trend in germany is huge catastrophe in berlin people are opening stores everywhere just without thinking of any concequences, selling this toxic i still do not get why the government has allowed this and supporting the idea of destroying humans, this industrial democracy greed is crucial and need to stop it. we people should stand for getting back to the roots again!

mordred478 I believe Dean Kamen's Slingshots should be installed everywhere, and anyone who has a steel or other non-single use plastic water container should be able to refill it for free. The savings in terms of disposing of and/or recycling single use plastic should pay for the Slingshots.

truthinroots Did you see the Ireland company that turns final use plastics into Diesel fuel?? Totally thought that was amazing and creative thinking rather than just dumping it all in the land fill they turn it back into reusable resources

foxamongbears I was arguing with a fellow organic farmer recently about his use of plastic rowcover. Actually farms on the whole are made up of plastic. Greenhouses. Irrigation. Fencing. Ugh.

kyle_boomer Trust China to only think of themselves an ban it recycling 🙄 there one of the worlds leader’s in tech couldn’t they have thought of a better cleaner alternative?
